Why are parliaments important?

Parliaments have three major functions:

  • Scrutiny
  • Representation
  • Legislation

On behalf of the electorate, parliamentarians scrutinise the policies of Government, amend – or even vote down – Government legislation and represent the views and concerns of their constituents.
